Mola Mola: Unreal and ugly beast!?

After a great tour through Java & Bali and relaxing a few days it was time to go diving! Back home I already made reservations at BaliScuba (http://www.baliscuba.com) to go diving August 5&6 around the island of Nusa Penida (between Bali and Lombok). Why Nusa Penida? Because there is a lot of current around that island which brings an enormous variety of underwater life. Also some rare animals like the Mola Mola sunfish which normally lives at depths more than several hundreds of meters, and in august tends to go closer to the surface into 'diving depths' around Nusa Penida. However, on the internet I already found warnings for difficult diving conditions: strong currents, cold waters and a lot of wind, not ideal, especially not for taking pictures.....
The first boat trip to Nusa Penida confirmed the ‘rough sea’. The sea was quite choppy all the way (makes going to the tiny toilet without breaking your neck a huge challenge). From a distance big waves could be seen hitting the vertical cliffs of south-west Nusa Penida. Apparently also some dive sites are present at that coastline e.g. Manta Point, however, most of the time too dangerous for the boat and divers.
So, on all five dives I made, we went to the north part of Nusa Penida through the restless, however, less dangerous, Ceningan channel.
August 5 we dove at PED; many fishes (big Puffer fishes), however a lot of damaged coral due to bad anchoring, and we dove in Toyapakeh (see map). The latter site had more undamaged corals, however less chance of seeing the Mola Mola and last but not least very strong (unstable) current. Saw a Marble Stingray and blue ribbon eel! I dove with 3mm wetsuit the rest with 5 or more, 27 degrees water temperature is not cold for me (see previous post!).
August 6 we went to dive site Tugu, where we saw quite some marine live a.o. an Eagle Ray. After a quick lunch (tuna sandwich) entered the water at S.D., with very impressive coral covering the bottom completely until the horizon, with many fishes, a.o. unicorn fish, needle fish. After waiting for a suitable tide/current we went into the water for the dive number 3 that day, in Crystal Bay. After a few minutes felt relatively cold water, 22 degrees. After about 20 minutes we saw a very very vague shadow disappearing far away. Disappointingly we could not find the Mola Mola back and we continued the cold dive (here I could use a 5mm suit). At the end of the dive during the slow ascent I checked my air once more since I had been fighting the current for a few minutes to avoid loosing the group. At the moment I replied to the dive guide (Menyun) at about 18 meters depth that I had 70 bars left he showed the ‘hand-sign’ for the Mola Mola. Like a submarine we dove to 30-33 meters and halted having a great view from a distance. Small bubbles were coming from my camera housing while I tried to catch the unreal Mola Mola sunfish on my camera. Since the Mola Mola was at 40 meters and we were running out of air and dive times and we did not want to be caught by unexpected currents we could not get closer. We enjoyed the encounter with this very strange, elegant big fish which was taking all the time in the world for being cleaned by banner fishes and others fishes. Unfortunately after about 5 minutes we had to ascend again. To compensate the dive depth and history, we stopped for 10 minutes at 5 meters. At the surface I had about 15 bars left… all in all a very exciting, spooky, unreal and amazing experience at the same time!
From the distance that we saw the fish it looked quite beautiful (check my pictures), while probably it is the most ugly looking fish in the world (for more info en pictures on these 'beasts' in general on internet check: http://www.earthwindow.com/mola.html or http://www.oceanlight.com/html/mola_mola.html). So, what do you think about this animal?

Wat een suf beest? Net alsof een deel van een andere vis na slachting opnieuw tot leven is gekomen... Geinig om tegen te komen tijdens het zwemmen.
